A Day in the Life of the BIM Specialist
As the BIM Specialist, you'll serve as a key technical leader supporting project teams across a large-scale construction program. You'll oversee BIM coordination, establish standards and best practices, facilitate collaboration among project stakeholders, and help drive innovation through digital construction technologies. Your work will directly improve project efficiency, quality, and long-term asset management across one of New York City's most significant infrastructure initiatives.
Responsibilities include:
- Serve as the primary BIM point of contact for clients, contractors, consultants, and project stakeholders
- Lead BIM coordination meetings, workshops, and model review sessions
- Develop and maintain BIM standards, execution plans, protocols, and workflows
- Oversee clash detection, model federation, and BIM coordination activities
- Manage BIM deliverables throughout design, construction, and project handover
- Ensure BIM models comply with QA/QC standards, ISO 19650, and client requirements
- Produce BIM progress reports, model audits, and lessons learned documentation
- Develop and deliver BIM training while mentoring junior team members
- Support 4D scheduling, 5D cost modeling, and 6D facility management processes where applicable
- Manage Common Data Environment (CDE) workflows to improve collaboration
- Provide technical support and troubleshooting for BIM software platforms
- Support interoperability between various design applications and project management systems
- Communicate BIM objectives, progress, and challenges to project leadership
- Delegate tasks and lead BIM initiatives across multiple projects
Requirements and Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree in Architecture, Engineering, or a related discipline
- 8+ years of progressive BIM or 3D modeling experience within the AEC industry
- Strong knowledge of construction and design processes
- Advanced proficiency with BIM software, including Revit, Navisworks, BIM360 Design Suite, and Assemble
- Experience with design tools such as AutoCAD, Rhino, Lumion, Twinmotion, Unity, Unreal Engine, or V-Ray
- Familiarity with Autodesk Revit API, Dynamo, and Grasshopper is a plus
- Strong understanding of BIM standards, QA/QC processes, and digital project delivery
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Adobe Creative Cloud
- Excellent communication, organizational, leadership, and multitasking skills
- Ability to prioritize work, lead teams, and manage multiple concurrent initiatives
